A Pirate Baby

Conor now says 'aye' when he means yes.  Not sure when he began turning into a pirate.

He also is working on jumping.  This may or may not be related to the pirate thing - too early to tell.

That's all.

This may be the first of a career in music videos.

Oh Hey Mickey!

After our amazing Christmas spent in Wisconsin and Illinois visiting some of our favorite people, we returned to the East for just one short week.

Then we got to experience the best Christmas present ever.  Mom and Dad D rented a house in Orlando  and flew us and C's aunt, uncle and cousins down to visit Disney World.  Being with my whole family at Disney World was truly the best week of my life...even better than visiting there when I was a kid.

Conor especially loved the Toy Story ride at Hollywood Studios with all its turns and whirls.  He tolerated all the other rides and pointed and said 'ohhhh' on some but none like Toy Story.  The only character he liked, though, was Tigger.  The rest he could have done without.  I was able to get one picture of all the kids with Mickey Mouse.  I think Conor only allowed it because his favorite big cousin Ally was there to protect him.

Christmas!

I have lots of great memories of Christmases past. Two really stick out though.

One was the year I got the Disney world play set for my Barbies. This was complete with a working Dumbo rise. New Barbies in Mickey Mouse Ears and lots more. Why this Christmas sticks out is obvious.

Another year I remember is when I got my Abercrombie pea coat. Abercrombie was clearly all the rage and this was my first pea coat. For some reason I associated pea coats with living in Boston - something I really wanted to do.

Now I live in Boston. And all I couldn't wait for this Christmas was to get back to the good fly-over country.

Here is Conor enjoying one of his favorite gifts from our little family's Christmas last night.

Merry Christmas!

Nothing Like a Good Book

There is nothing like a good book.  My love for literature has been mentioned here before.  Conor has seemed to inherit my penchant for reading until I cannot keep my eyes open any longer:

Or dropping everything to enjoy a good book:

Note the irony of reading A Good Day the day the Packers lost to the Chiefs, ruining the chance for a perfect season.

Calculated Risks

There have been so many moments where I've whispered in my head 'I can't wait to put this in C's blog' and then when I've had the chance...haven't done it.  And then as I thought more about it, I've realized that I'll lose those moments if I don't write them down.  And then when Conor is older and wants to hear about himself I'll give him the vague, generic answers of the big moments that stick out in my mind.  But I won't have the details there...the things that make him the little person he is right now.   So in an effort to not lose those details, to not be able to visualize the day this little baby learned where his belly is, I'm remembering to write them down.

We took C to the children's museum for the first time.  We played in this huge room with a jungle gym, a kitchen, a train set and all sorts of other goodness made specifically for babes ages 0-3.  At first, C clung to the side of the moveable bridge and wouldn't go forward unless one of us were on either side.  He wouldn't climb the swervy hill unless Dan held his hand and he just stood in amazement at the other kids definitely not ready to join them.

If this weren't real life, by the end of the day he would have made major progress.  He would have ran across the moveable bridge, jumped down the slide,  and made lots of new friends as we watched and shook our heads in smiling disbelief.

This is real life, though, so none of those things happened.  He did, however, attempt the swervy hill on his own by the end of the morning, explored a new part of the jungle gym (a part on the ground) and did try to go down the slide by himself.  By the time we left he was probably still the most timid kid there but he had stopped staring and started exploring a little bit more.

While the other kids seemed spontaneous, our boy observed, seemed to calculate the risk and take the path least risky.  A trait I think will serve him well even if at first it was a bit surprising.

A New England Fall

We've been really busy soaking up the amazing autumn like true New Englanders.

We went apple picking at a muddy, but fun, farm somewhere in the country.  Have you ever seen a more handsome pair?

For our long weekend in October, we took a much needed mini-break to Martha's Vineyard.  Even though the fall colors weren't out in total effect, the island was beautiful and peaceful and rejuvinating.

Conor even took his first unassisted steps on the deck.  Since then he has taken up to 6 steps alone.  He lets out a shriek of pure delight and pride almost every time he takes a step.

I think this is a practice we should all try.  Whenever you have moment of pride, please try shrieking.  It'll make the moment last a little longer I think.

Baby C at the ocean.

This pretty much sums up the view I had all weekend.  You can see the ocean in the distance.

I feel like C and I have so few photos together.  I love this one.

This past weekend we traveled to Detroit to celebrate the wedding of two dear friends.  Our layover back to the east was in Chicago.  We flew into town on a rainy day and saw the fog-covered skyline in the distance.  My heart soared for a moment.  Then I remember we didn't live there anymore.

New England is beautiful and fun in autumn but nothing compares to home.
